RWANDA’S KEY forward Kenneth Gasana has said he is fit and ready to lead the team against hosts Uganda in the final game of the Fiba Zone V Championships on Sunday at the Lugogo Arena in Kampala.

"I am now fully fit. It’s always an honour to play for Rwanda and our mission remains the same, to win and qualify for Afrobasket,” Gasana said in an interview on Friday.

Gasana, who plies his trade with Qatar’s Al Wakrah played a big role in the last game against Somalia which Rwanda won 85-71 on Wednesday.

After losing to defending champions Egypt in the opening game, Rwanda registered two wins over Kenya and Somalia and a win on Sunday over hosts Uganda will see them book their fifth appearance in the Fiba Afrobasket finals tournament in Tunisia next year.

Born in 1984 in the United States, Gasana was Rwanda’s leading scorer at the 2009 Fiba Africa Championship. He played for Boise State Broncos men’s basketball team from 2005 to 2007. He was a late addition to the Rwandan team for the 2009 Fiba Africa Championship hosted by Libya.

Nevertheless, he went on to average 18.3 per game, including a 31-point performance against Morocco, to help lead the Rwandans to a 9th place finish and their best performance to date at the African Championships.

Rwanda’s 85-71 victory over Somalia on Wednesday night put them in the driving seat to qualify in second place, behind Egypt. Kenya and Uganda have one win apiece, earned against Somalia.
