The country has witnessed an increase in the number of road accidents in the recent past, raising concern among the population. The situation has also led the public to ask whether the country has standards and deterrent laws that could ensure safety on our roads.

According to figures from the Rwanda National Police, road accidents have gone up significantly in the past few months. The figures indicate that 24,342 people were involved in road accidents since January. More than 166 lives were lost, while 1,947 people sustained serious injuries compared to 477 accidents registered last year.

Experts have blamed the situation on lack of a clear policy on road safety and commitment from stakeholders.

However, the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) disagrees, pointing out that ensuring road safety is a shared responsibility, which requires the contribution of Rwandans.
