A delegation of about 80 youth from Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) met with the Minister for East African Community Affairs Amb. Valentine Rugwabiza, to familiarise them with Rwanda’s stride in regional integration among other things.
The UNSA president Abubaker Matanda, who spoke on behalf of the delegation, said the region has immense resources which have not been fully exploited because of low regional integration.
"We live in a region with numerous challenges, and we feel as young people that these challenges can be addressed with the fast-tracking of the East African Community,” he said.
The Ugandan students arrived in Kigali on Tuesday night, on a four-day study tour organised under the theme: "Peace building and regional integration, the role of students.”
Amb. Rugwabiza applauded the visit, saying it is a good spirit of EAC integration.
"EAC is a people-centered community. We are working hard to make integration real,” Rugwabiza said.
The minister encouraged students to discuss regional unity and work for sustainable peace and regional opportunities.
"I encourage you to discuss peace building broadly and ensure that the available opportunities are maximised,” Rugwabiza added.
The minister reminded the youth that liberation struggles in both countries were led by young people who managed to change the course of history in their respective countries and the region.
The students also visited the Rwanda National Police headquarters in Kacyiru, where the the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Emmanuel K. Gasana explained to them the role played by the general public in crime prevention.
