Inter-schools cricket tournament begins today through October 4 at different grounds including Ndera Seminary, IPRC Kigali, and Kagarama SS.
The General Manager of Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA) Joshua Mwanja, announced at a function at the RCA headquarters Wednesday that the tournament is to help identify the teams that will join the U-15, U-17 and the U-19 squads in both the boys and girls categories.
"Other than promoting and developing the sport locally, the tournament is critical for identifying talent at various competition levels, including U15, U17 and U19 national teams,” said former Ugandan international Mwanja.
The two-week tournament is sponsored by Narayan Uniforms & Sports Ltd, which has injected Rwf600, 000 where the best players will be selected to make the girl’s team to play the Pepsi ICC Africa U-19 Girls Div One tournament that will take place from December 7-9 in Tanzania.
According to the organisers, 16 secondary schools from around the country will play in the Tournament.
Among the top cricket playing schools expected to battle for the winners’ trophies are; Kagarama SS & IPRC Kigali, the defending champions for boys and girls, respectively.
Others include; Efotec SS, Lycée de Ruhango, St. Joseph Kabgayi and Apred Ndera SS.
Action kicks off on Friday with IPRC Kigali facing Apade Secondary School on Friday at IPRC Kigali grounds from 1pm.
