Eric Nshimiyimana’s team overcame newly promoted Sunrise in shootouts 5-4 after a goalless draw in normal time. League champions APR FC took third place after defeating Mukura also on penalty shootouts 5-3 following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.
The city of Kigali-sponsored AS Kigali claimed the trophy and Rwf200, 000 in cash prize, Sunrise bagged Rwf150, 000, while APR walked away with Rwf100, 000. AS Kigali reached the final after beating Mukura 1-0 in the semi-final on Saturday thanks to the new signing Ernest Sugira, who netted the only goal of the match. Sunrise humbled APR in semi-final 4-2 in shoot out penalties after a 0-0 draw in normal time.
AS Kigali, who boosted their squad with four players namely; Sugira, Nova Bayama, Hamdan Bariyanga and Isaie Songa from APR FC last week, will kick off the new league season against Sunrise FC on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Police FC also won another four-team pre-season tournament held in Rubavu. Andre Cassa Mbungo’s team defeated hosts Etincelles 7-6 on penalty shootouts after a goalless 90 minutes. Rayon Sports beat DC Virunga 4-0 in third place playoff match.
