KARONGI — A seven-year old child who was allegedly raped twice by her uncle  in Kibuye has been admitted to Kibuye Hospital.

The child (names withheld) was delivered there by a neighbor called Clementine after she started passing blood.

A medical certificate obtained from the hospital indicates the girl was infected with sexually transmitted disease, gonorrhea and that her private parts were badly ruptured.

Police in Kibuye said  the suspect, Martin Ngerageza, 24 has already been arrested in connection with the alleged crime.

Sources say the girl was raped 6 months ago by Ngerageza, a resident of Nyarusazi, Bwishyura Sector, while her aunt Christine Furaha was having medical attention at Kibuye Hospital. However, according to the police Furaha is also wanted for questioning and she is allegedly still on the run.

Talking to The New Times, the child said that before reporting to police, she had told her aunt that Ngerageza had raped her twice but the aunt neglected it.

"When she was discharged from hospital, I told her that uncle had raped me but she told me not to tell anyone,” the girl said.

The girl added that the aunt instead sent her to her grandmother’s place. The woman reportedly wanted to conceal the crime in order to save her husband.

At the police station, the man reportedly admitted to the charges, saying he had been starved sexually due to the illness of his wife.

Police said such criminal cases have not been common in Karongi.
