SOUTHERN PROVINCE

MUHANGA —  Residents of Muhanga district have started receiving their national Identity Cards (IDs).

The issuing that kicked off last weekend has however been received with mixed feelings after some residents found their IDs not ready,  after spending hours queuing. Officials are yet to give an official explanation to that effect.

"We have lined up for hours only to find out that our cards were misplaced. There is no response that has been given by officials and we are told to keep waiting,” residents complained on Tuesday.

The number of residents missing out their IDs is yet to be officially established. However, Fidel Fundi, the district Director of Good governance said, "Such cases have been evident and they would be forwarded to responsible ministry in a report and their cards may be printed.”

Apparently, there were cases of malpractice in the process of distributing the cards as some residents were facilitated to jump the queue.

People who could not line up for their cards got access to the cards with the help of friends and acquaintances in charge of the issuing.

Other disgruntled residents walked away without their IDs accusing leaders of poor organisation and favoritism in the process.

"The process should be organized because time and efforts spent by residents affects daily activities and income,” one angry resident said.

The distribution will go on for the next months and over 30.000 residents are expected to get national IDs in the district.
