Three held in Kicukiro for brewing illicit beer

Three people have been arrested for allegedly brewing illicit local beer commonly known as ‘Kiboko’. Desire Badesire, Emmanuel Munyentwali and Muhindo Kiyoma are currently detained at Kicukiro Police Station.

According to the Police, the trio was arrested on Tuesday in Kigarama Sector, Kicukiro District.Police also impounded about 2,500 litres of the illicit beer (Kiboko), which the suspects had allegedly brewed. The seized illicit brew was destroyed in the presence of residents of Kigarama Sector.

The arrests came after residents who knew about the trio’s activities alerted police.

Badesire, the owner of the illicit brew confessed, saying he made a grave mistake not to notify Rwanda Standards Board (RSB).

Kiboko believed to be manufactured through blending sugar, wheat, sorghum, and sodium bi-carbonates.

District Police Commander Chief Supt Fred Ndoli commended the residents for volunteering information that led to the arrest of the trio.

Ndoli urged residents to strengthen partnership with security organs to stop those involved in criminal activities.

Jean de Dieu Kamurase, the Chemist Industrial Inspector for RSB urged those that wish to engage in the manufacture of local beer to first get authorisation from RBS.

Kamurase commended Rwanda National Police’s continued efforts in the fight against illicit brew.
