Police have maintained top spot in the national handball league after beating G.S St Alloys 39-29 on Saturday to move to 36 points with three matches remaining.

The win helped the league leaders to increase chances of adding a fourth trophy in their cabinet this season, having already won the Labour Day, Genocide Memorial and Liberation day tournaments.

Gilbert Mutuyimana and Gilbert Nzibonera scored eight and six goals respectively for the law enforcer’s side; while Peter Turatsinze and Jean Paul Kanyandekwe scored six goals each for St Alloys.

Elsewhere, the reigning champions Gicumbi beat Nyakabanda 30-20 to continue with their hunt to retaining the trophy, while former champions APR lost 24-35 to ES Kigoma 35-24.

Gicumbi remain second on the table with 33 points with five matches still to play. If they win all, they will retain the title regardless of what happens in Police’s remaining three (matches). A win is worth three points.

ES Kigoma’s win over APR keeps them on third position with 30 points and they have five matches remaining. The army side are in fourth place with 26 points and four matches left to play.
