Motorists using Rwamagana-Kigali highway spent hours Thursday evening clogged in traffic after a trailer carrying 35 tonnes of maize overturned injuring all on board including the driver and two turnboys.

By press time, the driver of the Tanzanian registered trailer, T 971 CUD, Charles Shukuru, was being treated at Rwamagana hospital.

Police officers at the scene confirmed that the accident occurred at around 12pm when the driver of the trailer lost control after he attempted to negotiate a sharp corner at high speed.

Police deployed cranes to the scene to remove the trailer.

Commissioner for Traffic Police George Rumanzi said the corner was a black spot.

He said more road signs will be put in place to warn drivers of the sharp corner ahead."We shall soon discuss with Rwanda Transport Agency (RTDA) to increase road signs mainly around the most dangerous spots along all the major highways,” he said

Alex Habiyambere, an eye witness, said many heavy vehicles usually veer off the road after failing to negotiate the corner.

"There is an accident at least in every two weeks involving cargo freight trucks,” he said.
