IN PICTURES: Fanfare Reception For The Cricket Champions

The national U-19 women cricket team, that made history to win the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifier after beating Tanzania by 6 wickets in the final on Monday, were given a heroes’ welcome on Wednesday morning upon landing at the Kigali International Airport where they boarded a Visit Rwanda branded bus.
The colorful parade to welcome the champions, through which the team was showcasing the trophy to the Kigalians, started at Kigali International Airport. The trophy was taken to Nyabugogo through BK Arena, Rwanda Development Board, Kacyiru and Kinamba areas of the city before heading downtown. The parade was then taken to Nyamirambo before they returned to the main city roundabout. The girls later headed to Gahanga Cricket Stadium with the trophy.
At Gahanga, the team was received by Minister of Sports Aurore Mimosa Munyagaju, who, at the same time, gave a message of recognition for the biggest achievement to win the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifier
The win enabled the young cricketers to book a ticket to the 2023 World Cup in South Africa. It will be the country's first appearance at the ICC Cricket World Cup. Africa will be represented by three countries; Rwanda, Zimbabwe and hosts South Africa.
Rwanda are drawn in Group B alongside England, Pakistan and Zimbabwe. The World Cup will run from January 5 – 30, 2023 and will be held in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
