The Chinese government has  awarded scholarships to 35 Rwandan students to pursue studies in various disciplines at various levels of higher education in China. The scholarships were awarded through the Chinese embassy in Kigali.

The students who will pursue undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral studies, were seen off in a cocktail at the Embassy Hall on Thursday.

"Go and acquire the knowledge that will help you respond to your individual, family, but more importantly national needs,” said Shen Yongxiang, the Chinese ambassador to Rwanda, who also urged beneficiaries to strive for  excellence.

The programmes under which the students were selected focus on critical areas where the country needs more skilled human resource.

These disciplines include civil engineering, finance, ICT, agriculture, medicine, communication, international relations, international business, and marketing.

 "Your spell in China shouldn’t be solely about studies; go and market Rwanda, showcase your country’s culture and natural beauty,” said the Director of Rwanda Education Board, Dr John Rutayisire.

"You needed to maximise this opportunity. Many of your colleagues out there are yearning to get these opportunities but they can’t get them.”

The Chinese government sponsors between 35 and 40 Rwandan students annually, in various higher education programmes.

 It also offers 100 slots for short training programmes to civil servants every year.

 "This is an opportunity not only for me but for my family and country. Once I complete my studies, I hope to return and help make a difference,” said Abdul Nuwagaba, who is going for undergraduate studies in  international trade and economics.

Gui Dan, the political attaché at the Chinese embassy in Kigali, commended the trust Rwandans have put in the Chinese education system.
