Kagame retires former police chief Gasana, dozens of other officers

President Paul Kagame has approved the retirement of six Commissioners of Police, along with several other officers, the Rwanda National Police (RNP) has announced.

The list of retirees, published in a statement released on Wednesday, September 27, includes Commissioner General Emmanuel Gasana, who currently serves as the Governor of Eastern Province, as well as three Commissioners of Police, namely; Emmanuel Butera, Vianney Nshimiyimana, and Bruce Munyambo.

CP Butera was until his retirement, the commandant of the Counter Terrorism Training Centre Mayange. Bruce Munyambo was the Commissioner of Community Policing.

Two Assistant Commissioners of Police Damas Gatare and Privat Gakwaya have also gone into retirement.

While Gasana has previously held the position of Inspector General of Police, the other five top officers have served as commissioners in various capacities.

The President also approved the retirement of five other senior officers, 28 junior officers, and 60 Non-Commissioned Officers, according to the police statement.

Seven police officers have retired on medical grounds while six officers have been discharged for other various reasons, it added.
