First silver medal for Rwanda at regional schools’ games

CYRIAQUE NDAYIKENGURUKIYE won Rwanda’s first medal in the 10000m boys’ final held yesterday at the East Africa Secondary School Games at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Ndayikengurikiye, a student at Rubavu’s Ecole Technique de Nazareen International, grabbed a silver medal after clocking 29:37:03. Kenyan Alfred Chelal Barach won the race in 29:24:07 and another Kenyan Josephat Ledama finished third in 30:01:00.

This was Rwanda’s first medal in the championship which has attracted several secondary schools from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and South Sudan.

In other results, St Aloys Girls of Rwanda defeated Tanzanian’s Makongo 3–0 as Lycee De Nyanza of Burundi thrashed Tanzania’s Kilabela 3-0 in volleyball.

In basketball, APE Rugunga boys’ team lost to Makongo SS 73-79 and 57-31 to Parklands of Kenya in girls’ competition, while Grace Nyinawumuntu’s GS Kabusunzu registered a 1-0 win over Butere from Kenya in girls’ football.

Rwanda’s netball, basketball, girls’ tennis and rugby teams have been eliminated in the group stages, while boys’ tennis and table tennis teams had by Thursday, qualified for knockout stages.

The 13th edition of the FEASSA Games is scheduled to climax on Sunday.
