The Council for East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa) chairman Leodegar Tenga has hailed Rwanda for organising a successful Kagame Cup.

Rwanda hosted the 40thCecafa Kagame Club Championship, which was won by Sudanese club El Merriekh after beating home side APR FC 1-0 in the final on Sunday.

Since 2002, President Paul Kagame has sponsored the competition by providing cash prize worth US$60,000 for the Cup winner and the two runner-ups.

 "We are proud to have a leader who supports football at the regional level, we are honoured to have him, he is good leader, who has helped football to grow in the region,” the Cecafa chairman Tenga said at the end of this year’s tournament.

Tenga said that to have the Cecafa –Kagame Club Championship in Kigali is something special not only to Rwanda but the entire region at large.

"We need to get more and more united in order to push for bigger things. Our region organises more competitions than any other on the continent, something we must be very proud of,” he added.

"As Cecafa we thank President Kagame for the good working relationship we have had with him for the last 13 years.”

Sudan’s giants, El Merriekh won 1-0 in final of Cecafa Kagame Cup.

Cecafa is the oldest regional football body in Africa and Rwandan clubs have won the annual club tournament five times--Rayon Sport (1998), APR FC (2004, 2007 and 2010) as well as Atraco FC, now defunct, who won it in 2009 after defeating El Merreikh 1-0 in the final held in Khartoum.
