Reference is made to the article, "Haiti quake survivor tops University of Rwanda’s sociology degree course” (The New Times, August 28).

I have worked in Haiti since 2004 with the United Nations. The truth is that Haitians think that Africa is a terrible place where no one would wish to be. And they still have a lot of challenges comparing Rwanda to a lot of African countries.

Few people here know about other parts of the world other than the US, Canada and Europe. Generally, they have no clue about Africa and yet they come from there.

Something needs to be done to help these brothers and sisters discover where their ancestors hail from. Of course this largely depends on the willingness of their leaders.

I am also proud to live with Rwanda National Police (RNP) which has more than 50 men and women protecting the security of this country among many other police officers from different corners of the world.

RNP was entrusted with one of the provinces to protect under the UN mandate. It’s an easy thing to feel close to Rwanda when you meet them onboard armoured carrier vehicles patrolling around and serving local people.
