20 years of rebuilding Rwanda’s health sector

Rwanda’s health sector, like many others in the country, has in the last twenty years evolved into vibrancy. In 1990, the health system had a total of 34 hospitals, 186 health centers, 69 dispensaries, 179 private pharmacies and 17 private medical clinics.

Rwanda’s health sector, like many others in the country, has in the last twenty years evolved into vibrancy. In 1990, the health system had a total of 34 hospitals, 186 health centers, 69 dispensaries, 179 private pharmacies and 17 private medical clinics.

In terms of human resources, only 261 medical doctors were working in the public sector. There were 23 pharmacists, 949 graduated nurses (A1, A2, A3) and 240 Auxiliaries (Annual report, 1990).
