RAILION AG, a European railway transport network, has unveiled plans of connecting Rwanda to the Indian Ocean.

According to a government statement, the German-based firm disclosed the train link plan during a meeting between a high-profile Rwandan delegation and the Rhineland Palatinate business community in Germany last week.

"During talks about investment opportunities in Rwanda at the headquarters of RAILION AG, the firm announced plans to help in the construction of a railway line that will link Rwanda to the Indian Ocean through Tanzania,” the statement reads in part.

Prime Minister Bernard Makuza led the Rwandan delegation that visited Germany’s Mainz City to cement relations between Rhineland Palatinate and Rwanda.

His entourage included the Minister of Local Government, Social Welfare and Good Governance Protais Musoni, the Minister of Lands, Environment, Forestry and Mines, Christophe Bazivamo and the Governor of the Northern Province, Boniface Rucagu.

As a gesture of total commitment on behalf of Rwanda and the Rhineland Palatinate towards the accomplishment of the eight Millennium Development Goals, Makuza and the Minister-President of Rhineland Palatinate, Kurt Beck, opened eight gates in Mainz city.

During the visit, the Rwandan team also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on environment protection and poverty eradication. The two parties agreed to meet regularly to assess progress registered.

The visit was also aimed at joining the German province in celebrating the Jumelage cooperation with Rwanda spanning to quarter a century.

In June, Rwanda marked the 25-year-old celebrations at a function which was graced by the unveiling of Africa’s biggest solar energy plant constructed on Jali Hill, Gasabo District constructed under the funding of Rhineland Palatinate.
