The Minister for Local Government, Francis Kaboneka, has urged youth to contribute towards the country’s socio-economic development by  placing national interest above self.

Kaboneka made the call on Monday while opening a two-week workshop for over 300 youth volunteers in crime prevention, drawn from across the country, in Musanze District.

The minister challenged the youth to take advantage of what has been achieved so far  to transform the country further.

"You can make Rwanda better and you are lucky there is a foundation to build on,” he told the youth, citing US, China, among other countries, which developed fast thanks to the role of nationals.

"You are the strength of our country and have to play a role to rebuild it further after it was destroyed and was rebuilt through commitment and determination of Rwandans,” he said.

Kaboneka cautioned the youth to be vigilant and help in the fight against drug abuse, child labour, prostitution and homosexuality.

Youth volunteers were hailed for their role in helping  prevent crime for almost six months since the association was formed.

The trainees will be equipped with crime prevention tips, according to ACP Damas Gatare, the Police spokesperson.

The group is trained by police in collaboration with National Itorero Commission and other partners.

Youth volunteers in the crimes prevention is an association that brings together youth who are committed in preventing crimes through working closely with police, local leaders and other security organs. 

So far, the association has over 7,000 members across the country, according to Jean Bosco Mutangana, the founder of the association.

"We know the country was liberated by young Rwandans and are committed to play a part in sustaining what has been achieved through ensuring security,” Mutangana said.
