Rwanda National Police has refuted claims that bodies recently seen floating in a lake in Burundi’s Muyinga Province were Rwandan citizens.

Several dead bodies were recently recovered in Lake Rweru on the side of Burundi by fishermen in the neighbouring country.

"We can confirm that there are no missing Rwandans among the bodies,” the Commissioner for Criminal Investigation Department”, ACP Theos Badege, said in a statement.

The mayors of Ngoma and Kirehe districts have also confirmed that no citizens in their area have been reported missing, the statement said.

"Through the usual good working relations with his Burundian counterpart, the Regional Police Commander-Eastern Province crossed to Burundi to continue investigation and inform his counterparts that there is no case of missing people on the Rwandan side,” ACP Badege added.
