Rwanda national volleyball team left attacker Lawrence Yakan Guma has signed for Turkish club, Palandoken Belediye – Erzurum.
He signed from Etoile Sportive Setif of Algeria, where he has spent the last three years. Palandoken Belediye – Erzurum is a new team in the Turkish Super League.
Guma’s move to Europe follows a decision by the Algeria Volleyball Federation to prohibit foreign players in their local league.
Last season, Guma helped L’Etoile Sportif de Setif to win the Super Cup and was named the Most Valuable Player.
Rwanda national team head coach Paul Bitok said of Guma’s move: "I think he’ll be a great success in the Turkish League after his impressive performance at ESS for the past three years.”
Yakan has been a regular for the national team for the last couple of years and his move will be a big boost for Bitok’s side.
Uganda-born Guma started his career at Ugandan side Sport-S before joining Kigali Volleyball club in 2005 from where he signed for APR two years later. In 2011 he joined Algerian side ESS.
