RUHANGO — Local leaders in Ruhango district have been asked to sensitise residents ahead of the September upcoming parliamentary elections.

Julienne Mukamanzi, a Ruhango National Women’s Council official said this during a one day elections training meeting over the weekend.

About 180 women and youth leaders and cooperative representatives acquired skills on the elections procedures. They were urged to disseminate the knowledge throught the electorate.

The training was sponsored by the National youth council. About 149,518, out of the 282,000 Ruhango residents are eligible to vote.

"The training is aimed at having the youths and women sensitized to participate fully in elections and to know the do’s and don’ts so as to have a democratic process in the elections” Mukamanzi said.

Mukamanzi added the participants will educate other residents and mobilize residents in order to have successful campaigns and electoral process.

Participants were trained on mode of campaigns, regularities of voting, the importance of elections, and the relevance to participate.

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) officials cautioned leaders and residents to maintain peace and security and to keep time and mobilize a big turn-up of voters.

Participants raised issues of uncorrected lists of voters, illegal voting by temporarily released prisoners, validity of national ID’s, modes of campaign and the need to observe peaceful elections.
