APR last evening joined Police and Rayon Sports in the quarterfinals of Cecafa Kagame Cup 2014 after drawing 2-2 with Kenyan side Gor Mahia at Kigali Regional Stadium.

Midfielder Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza gave APR the lead in the 23rd minute off Charles Tibingana’s free kick before Godfrey ‘Baba’ Kizito equalised for the Kenyan champions in the 59th minute of the game.

Godfrey Walusimbi made it 2-1 for Gor Mahia with a curling free kick from the edge of the area with seven minutes left on the clock. And it looked as though Gor Mahia had snatched all three points until substitute Bernabe Mubumbyi broke the Kenyans’ hearts with a stoppage time equaliser, effectively sending them packing out of the tournament.

Mubumbyi had come on for Jean Claude Iranzi.

It was the point that APR needed to secure a place in the quarterfinals, while Gor Mahia needed three points to boost their slim hopes of finishing among the top three teams in the group.

Gor Mahia will play their last game against Telecom of Djibouti on Sunday, with both sides having just pride to play for.

APR will play their final group game against KCCA of Uganda on Sunday but they could be without key central defender Emery Bayisenge, who suffered hamstring injury and was replaced by Elve Rugwiro.

Defending champions Vital’O of Burundi are also out of the competition following their 1-1 draw with El-Mereikh of Sudan – they both have four points but the Sudanese side have a better goal difference.

Earlier in the day, Atletico beat Telecom 2-1.

Andre Tokoto Nduwimana scored for Cedric Kaze’s side while Mohammed Mustapha equalised for Telecom in the 86th minute before Fiston Nzomukunda grabbed the winner in stoppage time.

The victory boosted the Burundians’ chances to progress after joining KCCA on six points but the latter have a game in hand – against APR.

APR’s victory means that all the Rwandan clubs in the tournament are topping their respective groups, ensuring they will avoid each other in the quarterfinals.
