ABOUBA SIBOMANA scored the only goal as Rayon Sports beat KMKM of Zanzibar last evening to reach the quarterfinals of Cecafa Kagame Cup 2014 championships.

The left full back scored with a wonderful free kick in the 74th minute, sparking scenes of jubilation at the Kigali Regional Stadium.

The win took Jean-Francois Losciuto’s side to the summit of Group A with seven points, two ahead of Azam FC of Tanzania. The other three teams in the group; Adama City, KMKM and Atlabara have two points apiece.

Rayon Sports, who join local rivals Police FC in the last eight, will meet Atlabara from South Sudan on Saturday in their last group match, while Azam take on Ethiopia’s Adama City on the same day.

The blues dominated the highly contested game in front of capacity crowd but could not find the net in the first half. Salita Gantil Kambale, skipper Fuadi Ndayisenga, Govin Motombo and Bertrand Yossa tried their luck but were all denied by KMKM goalie Patrick Thomas Gichob.

Police win third straight game

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Police FC continued their unstoppable form in the Cecafa Kagame Cup tournament, beating Somalia’s Banadir 3-1 to go to the summit of Group C.

Andre Cassa Mbungo’s side scored twice in the first half through Kipson Atuheire in the 4th minute, who converted with a cool finish after a good cross from Jacques Tuyisenge, and Mousa Habimana seven minutes, later from skipper Jean d’Amour Uwimana corner kick.

In second half, Jacques Tuyisenge scored the third in the 73rd minute two minutes after the Somali champions had pulled a goal back through Moustafa Zekor Garba.

Police FC have become a surprise team in the tournament after winning all their first three games, scoring five times and conceding one goal in the process.

In yesterday’s first game, Atlabara and Adama City shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.  Atlabara opened the scoring through Ajak Sebit in the 41st minute before Ayele Benyam equalised for Adama with 12 minutes left.

Benadir defeat to Police means they have lost all their games and are effectively out of the tournament.
