Local schools are banking on home advantage ahead of the East African Schools Championships which gets underway today in Kigali.

The championship which is entering its 7th edition runs from August 24-30 and is expected to attract 87 schools from the East African region.

Sports disciplines to be contested in include football, basketball, volleyball, netball, rugby, handball and hockey.

Ahead of the games, Emile Ruberwa, the communications’ officer in the Ministry of Education and one of the officials of the organizing committee said that they have been working round the clock to stage the best games ever.

"We have put in a lot of effort in the preparations and we are positive the championships will be a success,” he said. 

Apart from local schools whose expenses will be met by the Education ministry, foreign schools will cater for all their expenses during the six-day tournament.

Amahoro stadium, ETO Kicukiro and Red Cross (Kacyiru) are the venues for the games. Last year, the games were held in Kisumu, Kenya and Rwanda claimed the boy’s volleyball title.
