Karaoke host and band member, Jane Uwimana, produced her first single My New Love in high school and followed it with Niririmbire. Both songs hit the airwaves in 2008. Karaoke, being trendy in Kigali, has broadened her fan base as she gets to sing for her patrons their favourite songs. Uwimana spoke to Society Magazine’s Doreen Umutesi about her sense of style and how fashion portrays one’s personality.
How would you describe your fashion sense?
I really value how I dress and how I appear because dress code constitutes pretty much how people see you. I can say fashion portrays one’s personality or character. For instance when I’m going to perform, I wear an outfit that is decent but sexy. I make sure I never wear anything that will make people disrespect me in any way.
What’s your favourite clothing item?
Dresses are my favourite clothing items because they are the most outstanding feminine outfit and they are considered the most decent outfit for young women.
Where do you shop for clothes?
I don’t have a specific place where I shop for clothes but I have some vendors who call me when they find clothes they think will fit me. Although I buy clothes from boutiques, I prefer second hand clothes because they are usually unique.
What do you consider when shopping clothes?
I first consider the design and the fitting. If the outfit looks good on me and I have not seen it on anyone, and the price is pocket friendly, then I will buy it.
Your favourite fashion accessory?
A wrist watch is my favourite fashion accessory. I don’t feel comfortable walking out of the house without a watch for any occasion.
What is your favourite clothing item on a guy?
Shoes and belts are some of my favourite fashion accessories on a guy. They portray a guy’s class. You can tell if shoes are cheap or expensive from their quality.
What’s your favourite scent?
Amor or any Egyptian perfume.
Any fashion advice?
It’s very simple; comfort first.
