The Ideal Democratic Party (PDI) has announced that it will endorse President Paul Kagame’s bid for re-election in 2024.
In a statement on Saturday, September 23, party president Mussa Fazil Harerimana reiterated PDI’s 2003 commitment to endorse Kagame whenever he ran for president.
President Kagame recently told French newspaper Jeune Afrique that he would be a candidate in 2024.

"PDI party promises His Excellency Paul Kagame everlasting cooperation in the continuous development of our country,” Harerimana said in the statement shared on the party’s account on X.
Kagame became president in 2000 and was first elected into the position in 2003. His third term, which began in 2017, will end in 2024. Elections are due in August of the same year.

Harerimana said PDI supported President Kagame in the pursuit of the unity of Rwandans, protection of the country’s sovereignty, and development through consensual, inclusive democracy.
In June this year, Parliament adopted a constitutional amendment that allows Rwanda to hold presidential and parliamentary elections at the same time.
Harmonised elections will save up to Rwf6 billion, according to the National Electoral Commission.
