Dear doctor;
I ‘m a big fan of milk and take it in the morning and during all meals. My friends say it is not good to take it all the time. How much milk is too much?
Cathy
Dear Cathy,
Such intake of milk like other foods depends on one’s choice, age, body weight and presence or absence of other medical conditions.
Milk is an excellent source of calcium (300milligram/8 ounce glass) which is needed by the body to maintain bone density and prevent osteoporosis. But that calcium can also be got from other sources as well.
If one likes milk, drinking 1,000mg per day is okay up to the age of 50 in women, whereas after 50 years, it can be increased to 1200mg per day.
Milk is harmful if one has lactose intolerance or becomes sick after drinking milk. If somebody has flatulence or bloating or any discomfort after drinking milk, it should be avoided.
Use of milk is also harmful if one is obese, because milk with cream adds on to calories.
But if there is no problem after drinking, you can continue to consume milk as before.
