THE NEWLY appointed Police FC head coach Andre Cassa Mbungo has revealed that his first priority is to win the Cecafa Kagame Cup, which is set for August 8 to 24.

The Peace Cup runners-up are in Pool C alongside defending champions Vital’O of Burundi, Sudan’s El Merreikh and Benadir of Somalia. This year’s tournament has attracted a record 14 clubs.

Police will start with El Merreikh on August 9 and the former AS Kigali coach Cassa Mbungo wants to make a trophy-winning start to his reign. Police FC, who are making their debut in the regional tournament, have never won any trophy in the club’s 13-year history.

"It is going to be our first appearance in the tournament and we need to show what we are capable of, we need to show that we are able to compete on a high level. We have a strong team, which can do better in any tournament,” Mbungo told Times Sport on Thursday.

He added, "I am building the team mentally and physically so that we can have a better side for the whole tournament as well as the upcoming league.

We will do our best to win the cup that is my first priority.”

The government of Rwanda is sponsoring the two week tournament to a tune of $200,000, while Cecafa has pumped in a further $100,000.

Winners will take home $30,000 on top of the trophy, runners up $20,000 and third place finishers will walk away with $10,000.
