GICUMBI — The National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC) will continue supporting initiatives towards the healing process in the country.

NURC’s Executive Secretary, Fatuma Ndangiza said this recently during a two- day symposium on Socio-therapy at Hotel Urumuli.

The symposium was organised by Byumba Episcopal Diocese (EER) aimed at healing traumatised souls of genocide survivors and children orphaned by the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.

Speaking as chief guest Ndangiza said, "The Unity and Reconciliation Commission is committed to supporting all initiatives aimed at trauma healing and counselling services rendered to genocide survivors and orphans.”

She hailed the organisers of the symposium for initiating healing efforts in the Sectors of Rutare, Kageyo, and Byumba in Gicumbi and Tumba in Rulindo district. She promised to solicit support from the Ministry of Health to support the Socio-therapy initiative.

Rev. Emmanuel Mugiraneza, of EER Byumba said besides providing counselling services, their initiative has donated goats, pigs and rabbits to Genocide survivors and other vulnerable groups in the districts of Gicumbi and Rulindo to improve their economic wellbeing.

Also present at the symposium was the Mayor of Gicumbi district Bonane Nyangezi, the Bishop of Byumba EER- Diocese Onesphore Rwaje, and the Executive Secretary of Northern Province, Deo Kabagamba.
