Celebrated afro-fusion artiste Mani Martin is famous for reasons beyond his music; his dress sense has also become something to look out for. His signature look recently has been custom made African print outfits.

Collins Mwai talked to him about this trend, choosing what’s right for this unpredictable weather and what looks best on a girl.

If you were to describe your dress sense briefly, what would it be?

My preferred fashion and dress code is unique and it has to be original. It always has an African touch; I would simply call it, African Swagger.

The weather is hard to figure out, at times hot at times cold and quite unpredictable, how do you think men should go about it clothing wise?

Honestly I don’t have any specific clothing for the season. The climate shouldn’t change your lifestyle or fashion sense.

What style or clothing items do you think men should try to avoid at the moment?

I think if men really want to look good, they should avoid tight clothing because when it’s hot it can make you sweat. You can easily smell like you’ve been doing hard labour.

What’s your take on second hand clothes?

They are the most reliable when it comes to authenticity and unique relatable designs. However, avoid inner-ware, or personal attire like socks and hats for hygiene-related reasons.

Your ideal shopping place for clothes is?

I sometimes shop for clothes at Zahabu Magazine, Mr Price in town, and Nyamirambo street.  But most of my clothes are custom made; I come up with my own style, go to my tailor and find out how we can come up with a wearable design.

By any chance do you wear second hand clothes?

I do wear second hand clothes; actually all my pants and shoes are second hand.

Which celebrities do you think have a good dress sense?

Locally I think Masamba, Knowles and Alpha Rwirangira have a very good dress sense.  In the region, Diamond form Tanzania has great outfits and internationally I like John Legend.

What do you consider when shopping for clothes?

When I am shopping for clothes I consider the colour of the outfit and how unique it is.

Boxers or briefs?

Boxers

Do you go for brands or do you look out for specific features of clothing items?

I mostly do both depending on what kind of clothes I’m looking for.

What’s your favourite fashion accessory?

I will rock a hat any time.

What is your favourite clothing item on a girl?

I like girls in mini-skirts.

What clothing items or accessories do you think every guy should have?

I think every guy should have a pair of socks.
