Editor,

Refer to the article, "Nation mourns Gatsibo road accident victims” (The New Times, July 23).

I would like to send my condolences to the families that lost loved ones in the fatal road accident.

It is disturbing to hear that the accident was caused by a reckless and negligent driver who was over-speeding while at the same time speaking on phone.

I think it is high time drivers are sensitised to appreciate the value of human life. It is unacceptable that negligence or irresponsibility of one or two individuals cost the country such a big number of valuable citizens, including civil servants, nurses, government officials and businesspeople.

On the other hand, passengers should also be responsible for their lives. Don’t allow a driver to over speed.  The Government has constructed good roads to ensure safety; so drivers should not abuse that privilege by sacrificing lives of innocent people through reckless driving.

Police should take serious punitive measures against reckless drivers including confiscating their driving licenses or even revoking them and banning them from driving for life.

May the souls of the deceased rest in peace.

**************

The Police should institute measures to deal with drivers who over-speed. These days, whenever one goes on a journey; he or she is not sure whether the journey is going to end safely.

If it is possible, introduce speed governors for the Omni buses that ply our roads because they are the most notorious.

Unless serious measures are taken to address the problem of drivers who drive under the influence of drugs, and the problem of owners of these buses who push drivers to make as many trips as possible, carnage on our roads will continue to claim many victims.

The traffic police should take extra measures before it is too late.
