UBUMWE Basketball Club are the champions of this year’s women basketball league.

They claimed the crown after easily registering victory over RAPP in their final game of the season played at KIST courts yesterday.

Ubumwe BBC who also won the pre-season tournament in February won their first league title prior to thrashing 67-43 Rwandan Allied Peace for Progress (RAPP) in the last match of the women’s national basketball championship.

Ubumwe BBC head coach Jacques Habige told Sunday Sport that he was extremely happy with the milestone achievement. "I can’t believe we won this title dethroning a dominant APR who were reigning champions since 2008. Thanks to my players for this success.”

Ubumwe won the title with 15 points, on level with APR but the latter had a less score average.

RAPP and UR-Huye campus finished third and fourth-placed with 11 points respectively while UR-college of education finished bottom in the fifth position with seven points. The first four will feature in the forthcoming play-offs set for early August.

In men’s league, new entrants Gisenyi BBC beat 62-56 struggling 30-Plus and are back in action this morning playing IPRC-Kicukiro at 11am KIST courts while Rusizi BBC is hosting UGB this morning at 9am in Rusizi District.
