TANZANIAN TENNIS youngster Omari Sulle maintained his 2014 good form to be crowned Under-14 boys’ champion at the International Tennis Federation (ITF)/Confederation of Africa Tennis (CAT) East African Junior Open in Rwanda.

The tournament that brought together top East African junior players ended in Kigali, Rwanda mid this week. It was meant for U-12 and 14 boys and girls who battled it out in two legs.

Sulle, Arusha youngster triumphed over Benin’s Delmas N’tcha in both legs. He won the first leg by 2-1 sets in the preliminary round and capped it up with a straight two-sets victory in 6-2, 6-0 in the second leg on Wednesday.

In the first leg final, Sulle started the game slowly and lost the first set 6-7, but came back strongly to level the score 6-1 in the second and sealed the victory in the decider with a 6-4 win.

But the promising youngster did not waste time in the lop-sided second leg in which he completely outshone his opponent. Sulle, who is currently studying at a Burundi tennis academy, pulled the same feat in Dar es Salaam and Bujumbura in February and May this year respectively.

Another Tanzanian, Esther Nankulange, avenged her first leg defeat to Kenyan Angela Nyagweso by beating Rwandese Grace Ndahunga 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the U-14 girls’ second leg title.

That saw Tanzania take two titles in the second leg out of the five players who represent the country. 

Participating countries were Burundi, DR Congo, Tanzania, Benin, Kenya and hosts Rwanda. The tournament that started on July 9 was played over two legs. The first leg ended last Saturday, while second leg ended on Wednesday.
