One miner has died while seven other miners, who had been trapped inside a mine that collapsed, were rescued in Gakenke District today.

The deceased miner has been identified as Léonard Ntibanyibuka, 26.

The last miner was pulled out at 7am.

"It is a miracle of God that we survived such a terrible incident. We were buried under rubble for several hours. We tried to rescue ourselves by digging ourselves and we met the rescuers, who spent the whole night digging to save us, halfway”, one of survivors  identified as Cyprien Nkomejimana said.

Residents who The New Times spoke to called it a "miracle” that the seven miners were rescued because they had battled for several hours to recue them.

The mine, operated by Ruli mining company, caved in at around 2p.m on Thursday, police has said.

The miners are members of miners cooperative, COMIKAGI, which operates in the area.
