PEACE CUP finalists Police FC have unveiled former AS Kigali coach Andrew Cassa Mbungo as their new head coach ahead of the Cecafa Kagame Cup slated for next month in Kigali.  

Mbungo signed a three-year contract to replace Ugandan Sam Ssimbwa, who resigned on Friday. 

Police FC Spokesman Jean de Dieu Mayira confirmed the development last night. 

He said, "We have a new coach in Cassa Mbungo. He is a winner and we believe he will raise the level of our team.”

"His task is to build a strong squad which will win trophies in the coming years and we believe the mission is attainable considering his track record.” 

An excited Mbungo said, "The club wanted me and I have joined them.”

"I have a big task at hand because I have to prepare the team for the upcoming Cecafa Kagame Cup. I want to build a strong team and I will do what it takes to achieve my goals,” added the 2013 Peace Cup winner with AS Kigali. 

Police are in Pool C of the Cecafa Kagame Cup championship alongside defending champions Vital’O of Burundi, Sudan’s El Merreikh and Benadir of Somalia. 

Rayon Sports are in group A alongside five-time Kagame Cup winners Young Africans from Tanzania, Coffee [Ethiopia], Atlbara [South Sudan] and KMKM [Zanzibar]. 

Arch rivals APR are in Group B alongside Kenyan giants Gor Mahia, Uganda’s KCCA, Flambeau de l’est of Burundi and Djibouti’s Telecom. 

The Cecafa Kagame Cup tournament 2014 edition will run from Friday August 8 to 24. 

Ssimbwa resigned after one year in charge of the Cops side which he failed to guide to any silverware as he promised when he replaced Serbian Goran Kopunovic in May 2013. 

Cassa Mbungo was instrumental last season for AS Kigali. Besides helping the City of Kigali sponsored side to third place in the Turbo King Football league this season, he helped the club reach the 1/8th round of the Africa Confederation Cup in its maiden appearance in the continental club football.
