Four fire brigade trucks are on the scene still battling the blaze that razed parts of Quartier Mateus in the  Kigali Central Business District this afternoon. Currently one building is still in flames while others are smoldering.

The National Police, assisted by the RDF, has cordoned off the area from curious onlookers and desperate shop owners who stand to lose millions of francs worth of property, with a fifty metre perimeter

A visibly shocked shop owner, who witnessed the outbreak first-hand, believes that the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring. He told The New Times that he had to flee for his life when he heard the commotion caused by the fire.
