IT MAY SOUND unbelievable yet it’s true that some Brazilians would not mind their arch enemies Argentina winning the 2014 Fifa World Cup despite the historical rivalry between the South American neighbors.
Ideally, Brazilians want to see their team lift a sixth world title, but first they don’t think Luis Filipe Scolari’s men will survive Germany in today’s semi-final in Belo Horizonte.
Which is why Adriano a native of Sao Paulo but lives in Barcelona, Spain and currently back in his home country for the world cup, would prefer Argentina to win the title instead of a European team. "I would love to see my team win it but without our two key players, I don’t think we will survive the Germans in the semifinals.
Germany is a better team around than Brazil, so in case they eliminate us, we will support Argentina against Holland in other semifinal,” he told Times Sport in a random interview on the streets of Sao Paulo on Monday.
He noted that, "For us, the dream final would be Brazil vs Argentina, and it would even be more satisfying for Brazil to win the title having beaten Argentina. But if we don’t beat Germany, we would gladly support Argentina to take it.”
Regarding missing Neymar and Tiago Silva for today’s important game, Adriano said, "Neymar is the symbol of the Brazil team and he will be hugely missed, nonetheless, I still hope we can beat Germany 1-0 with striker Fred scoring the winning goal, and as for Silva, I think Dante, can do a good job alongside David Luiz in defence.”
While Adriano wants either Brazil or Argentina to win the cup, his female compatriot Mia is tipping Germany to lift the cup after beating the Netherlands in the final.
She said, "Both Germany and Holland have better teams that is why I believe they will win their respective semifinals and meet in the final. My first team is Brazil but I also support Germany and I think they have the best squad to win the world cup.”
Meanwhile, for Adriano, the only reason Argentina can win the world cup is because they have Lionel Messi, who he described as a giant among the current crop of footballers.
"In Brazil we have Neymar, who is a monster in many aspects, but Messi is giant among them all, he can win a game for his team almost single handedly--but they also have other good players like Aguero, Higuain to support him though they will miss Di Maria, who is injured,” he said.
Argentina takes on Holland in tomorrow’s second semifinal in Sao Paulo seeking to reach the world cup final for the first time since Italian 90 when they lost Germany in the final.
Their last world cup triumph was back in 1986 in Mexico when a certain Diego Maradona was the captain.
