MATHIEU UWIZEYIMANA and Megane Ingabire were crowned the 2014 BRD Liberation Day tennis tournament champions after staging impressive performances in the finals held at Amahoro tennis club courts yesterday.
The 24-year-old Uwizeyimana (seed three) stunned defending champion Dieudonne Habiyambere to clinch the men’s title winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in two hours. In the women’s category, Ingabire also easily dethroned defending champion Gisele Umumararungu 6-1 6-1 to win the title.
Speaking to Times Sport, Uwizeyimana said, "I am extremely happy for the victory because this is my first major title in my career. It was a very hard game but I fought hard to defeat Habiyambere.”
Habiyambere said, "Let me first congratulate Uwizeyimana. He played extremely well compared to past matches. I lost because I was not aggressive and confident in my style of play.” Fidele Bayama Kamanzi won the amateur category title defeating Benoit Bicamumpaka 6-1 6-4 in the final. Winners in the professional category pocketed Rwf 100,000 each while finalists were given Rwf 80,000 each.
