Shock and grief engulfed Akaziba Village in Karembo Sector of Ngoma District, after a 34-year-old man went wild and hacked his wife to death with a machete in a domestic fight.

The body of Josiane Nyirahabima, 26, was found in a pool of blood by neighbours on Friday night. Police took the body to Kibungo District referral hospital for autopsy. According to residents, the couple had continuous domestic disputes

"They could always be heard quarrelling at the top of their voices. Neighbours have intervened many times to help the couple without success…we however never expected such a tragedy,” said a neighbor who requested to remain anonymous.

Eastern Region Police Spokesman, Senior Superintendant Benoit Nsengiyumva confirmed the incident, adding that police were hunting down the suspect.

Meanwhile, police in Kirehe District yesterday intercepted a Tanzanian registered truck carrying over 200 kilograms of marijuana. The driver has been arrested and detained at Nyakarambi Police Station.

Police acted on a tip-off by the public that there were people attempting to smuggle the drug into the country through the border post. Police said it was not clear where the marijuana was destined for, but the truck was carrying other goods to Kigali.

Police officers trailed the vehicle from Rusumo border to Gatore Trading Centre.

"The marijuana was ostensibly going to be offloaded from there…the Volvo trailer was carrying at least 200kg of marijuana. The vehicle and the driver are held until further investigations,” said Nsengiyumva.
