Over 400 guests - diplomats, corporate leaders, intellectuals, journalists and students – attended the Liberation Day celebrations organized Friday in New Delhi by the High Commission of Rwanda to India.
According to a statement from the mission, the event was attended by Vijay Kumar Singh, the Indian Minster of State for External Affairs, in the newly formed Government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Meaningful liberation and rebirth of Rwanda came on 4 July 1994 when the Rwanda Patriotic Army (now Rwanda Defence Forces) under the leadership of President Paul Kagame captured Kigali, stopped the Genocide and set the country on a path to rebirth,” Rwanda’s envoy to India, Ernest Rwamucyo, told the gathering.
"Twenty years after liberation, Rwanda has a lot to celebrate. Like the proverbial phoenix, Rwanda has risen from its ashes. What was a failed state two decades ago has become a model for successful post-conflict reconstruction”.
The event was reportedly colored by a cultural blend of Rwandan and Indian dances and songs.
IT was also attended by Prakash Jain, Honorary Consul of Rwanda in Mumbai and Mohan Suresh, Honorary Consul of Rwanda in Bangalore, who were each given a "certificate of recognition for their outstanding service in fostering partnership between Rwanda and India.”
