PHOEBE Muyoboke, better known by her stage name Jody, is an afro pop artist whose song Ndacyashikanya has received over 6,571 views on YouTube. The 22-year-old artiste is also a second year student at Mount Kenya University pursuing a degree in Social Sciences. Jody’s songs Tenderness and Njye Nawe are receiving fair airplay on Rwandan radio stations. The soft-spoken singer spoke to Doreen Umutesi about blending fashion and why it’s best to keep it simple.

 How would you describe your dress sense?

Elegance and simplicity are two words that describe my dress sense. I love dressing up in a decent but sexy way. 

What’s your favourite clothing item?

Jeans are my favourite clothing item. I feel more confident in jeans than any other outfit. However this changes if I’m going to perform on stage, shooting a music video or if I’m attending events that require a specific kind of dress code. 

Where do you shop for clothes?

I don’t have a specific place or boutique that I shop from. I will shop anywhere as long as I see an outfit that I like. I shop from Mr. Price, Miss Kelle, I even go to Remera or Kimironko market. I’m also planning to buy clothes online because it seems like one can order what they want and it can be sent at once with just one click.  

What do you consider when shopping clothes?

When shopping for clothes, I look at colour first because it is the colour that attracts me, and then I will consider the comfort, design and price. The outfit should be affordable but not too flashy. 

Your favourite fashion accessory?

A scarf and a pair of sunglasses beat my other treasured accessories like jewelry and handbags. I always have a scarf somewhere in my bag. 

What is your favourite clothing item on a guy?

A simple leather jacket and shoes; they are the first items that catch my eye. The jacket should bring out his physique.

What’s your favourite scent?

I will buy Elizabeth Arden perfumes any day. 

Any fashion advice?

My advice is to keep it simple and wear what makes you feel good.
