JEAN CLAUDE GASIGWA’S hopes of winning the annual Liberation tennis tournament title were shattered after losing to seed five Olivier Nkunda yesterday at Amahoro tennis courts.
Nkunda powered into the last four of the tournament with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 straight sets win against the former champion. The win means Nkunda will face defending champion Dieudonne Habiyambere who ousted Eric Bimenyimana 5-7, 7-6, 6-2. Olivier Havugimana eliminated Ernest Habiyambere 6-3 6-4 to set up another entertaining semi final bout against Mathieu Uwizeyimana who needed 7-5, 7-5 to dispatch Hamis Gatete.
"I am glad I made it to the semi final. I intend to keep my focus on the title defense. I expect a tough match against Nkunda but I am optimistic on winning,” defending champion Habiyambere said.
The semi final round in both men and women categories will be played on Saturday.
