THERE WAS not a dull moment last weekend at Goethe Institut Kigali as legendary Grammy award winning singer Marcus Hummon, alongside son Levi, treated revelers to an array of great country music in a non-stop two hour performance.
Songs like Bless the broken road, Super natural, Cowboy take me away, Something to say to Mr. Gideon, some of which were written and sung by Marcus Hummon with other country singers, were on the playlist.
His son, a newly signed country singer and song writer, Levi Hummon, held the audience’s attention with songs like Make it love and Free falling.
The duo also sang other musicians’ compositions in what they called ‘inspiring music’. They sang Bob Marley’s No woman, no cry which got the crowd singing along.
Things got a bit mellow when the Hummons sang Amazing Grace, a popular Christian hymn, and encouraged the crowd to sing along.
Levi Hummon has just been signed to the prestigious record company, Machine Label Group; the company behind names like Taylor Swift, a renowned country singer. His early efforts include co-writing (with his father) and performing the song, Make It Love, which was the feature song of the celebrated documentary film To: The Story of Roman and Nyro, and was nominated for the Oscars.
As for Marcus Hummon, in the twenty five years of writing and performing in Nashville, Tennesse, he has written numerous chart-topping songs including the 2006 Grammy Award winning (Best Country Song), Bless the Broken Road.
