A MAN in Kigali has been arrested over allegations of forging stamps of various public and private institutions, including schools and hotels.

The 38-year graduate of engineering from the University of Rwanda’s College of Science and Technology (UR-CST) was arrested on June 26 in Kicukiro District.

Police also recovered forged stamps, including those of Serena Hotel, Rubavu District and various schools.

Also recovered at his house are stamps for ‘ghost’ construction companies called MADICAN and EPEFOC, allegedly run by the suspect.

It is alleged that the suspect, currently detained at Kicukiro Police Station, has also been disguising as the notary officer for Rubavu District and defrauding people to ‘notify’ their documents.

Superintendent Modeste Mbabazi, the Police spokesperson for central region, said the suspect was arrested with the help of his wife.

"His wife couldn’t bear such illegal activities and reported the matter to police, which led to the arrest of the suspect and seizure of the exhibits,” Supt. Mbabazi said.

He called upon the general public to always report suspected persons and illegal activities done in their localities.

Counterfeit, under Article 606 of the penal code, attracts a sentence of between five and seven years and a fine ranging between Rwf300, 000 and Rwf3 million or both, on conviction.
