Police handball club extended their national league dominance this season after defeating reigning champions Gicumbi 38-30 at Kimisagara Youth Sports Centre on Sunday.

Goals from Gilbert Mutuyimana (12) and Haruna Bizimana (six) helped Police sink their archrivals, who had Emilly Giraneza and Modest Ifashuwayo as their top scorers with six goals apiece.

"We have now gone five points clear at the top of the table thanks to great work from my players,” said Police coach Antoine Ntanganyimana.

Gicumbi head coach Ebenezel Murenzi said he was surprised with the loss.  "I can’t believe that we lost a game we were supposed to win.”

Police remain at the summit of the standings with 25 points, five ahead of ES Kigoma, who moved into second place following their 33-21 win over University of Rwanda’s College of Education (formerly KIE).

Gicumbi dropped to the third position with 18 points.
