The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has embarked on rallying support for vulnerable families as part of the Force’s efforts toward alleviating poverty, enhancing healthcare and ensuring security.

This is the focus of this year’s Police Week activities that has seen the Force pay medical insurance for 1,500 people in Karongi District.

The Force also donated 10 cows and awarded eight individuals and groups with Rwf2.3 million for composing best songs and poems that promote police-public partnership through the community policing approach.

It also handed over a house worth Rwf9 million it constructed for Felicitee Mukankundiye, a vulnerable Genocide survivor in Busasamana Sector of Nyanza District and inaugurated the construction of other four houses for vulnerable persons.

"I’m short of words to express my joy today. It is beyond me. These are fruits of good leadership, thanks to President Paul Kagame,” the joyful Mukankundiye said.

Other donations include 420 mobile phones to heads of villages in Nyanza District to ease communication with security organs in crime prevention, mosquito nets and a motorcycle given to one Juvenal Ndagijimana of Musanze District for his outstanding songs on crime prevention.

In Kirehe, four Police posts, valued at Rwf70 million, were inaugurated.

The posts were constructed by the district in Gahara, Mahama, Mpanga and Kigarama sectors as a gesture of cooperation with the Force.

Dr Alvera Mukabaramba, the minister of State for social affairs, called on the public to double their effort in maintaining security.

IGP Emmanuel Gasana called on Rwandans to play a greater role in fighting crime.

He pledged continued support to development initiatives and getting poor communities out of poverty as one of the ways to sustainable security.

Gasana, however, said road accidents and drug abuse, among others, are still major challenges to security and cautioned drivers and motorcyclists against violating traffic rules.

Kirehe District has established 46 anti-crime clubs in schools and a hotline (4137) to ease crime reporting, according to mayor Protais Murayire.

The Minister for Internal Security, Sheikh Musa Fazil Harelimana, during the launch in Musanze, commended the Northern Province residents for cooperating with RNP to combat security threats in the region.
