Rwanda’s new ambassador to Burundi, Amandin Rugira, on Tuesday presented his credentials to President Pierre Nkurunziza.
The envoy held talks with President Nkurunziza and other senior Burundian government officials in the capital Bujumbura, according to a statement from the embassy.
Rugira thanked the President for accepting him as Rwanda’s envoy to Burundi and extended warm greetings from President Paul Kagame, reiterating Rwanda’s appreciation for the good relations between the two countries and pledged to work hard to strengthen them.
He also briefed Nkurunziza on the security situation in Rwanda which he described as stable.
He, however, told President Nkurunziza that the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) militia was still active in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and that it continued to pose a security threat to Rwanda and the region.
President Nkurunziza hailed the Rwandan leadership for its efforts towards the economic development of the country and assured the new envoy of his full support in fostering the existing bilateral cooperation.
Rugira is Rwanda’s immediate former envoy to the DRC.
