Police in Musanze District on Saturday destroyed a variety of drugs and illicit brews worth millions of francs as part of the ongoing ‘Police Week’ activities.

The drugs were destroyed at Muhoza Police Station in the presence of a large number of youths, local leaders, police and army.

The contraband included over 160 litres of Kanyanga, and sachets of other illicit brew like Blue Sky, Host Waragi, Coffee Spirit, Chief Waragi, and about 5,000 pellets of marijuana.

Most of the drugs are said to be smuggled into the country from neighbouring countries, especially DR Congo and Uganda.

Supt Emmanuel Hitayezu, the police spokesperson, Northern Region, told residents that the drugs not only have negative effects on users, but also on communities.

He urged all citizens to play an active role in ensuring that the drug business does not thrive in their communities, challenging them to always provide timely information about the dealers.

The drugs were seized from various areas across the district.

Many of the dealers were arrested according to police, although the number was not divulged.

Residents especially the youth, said they were committed to fighting drug abuse in their communities.

"I know drugs are harmful to both consumers and non consumers,” said Egide Ntegerejimana, 21, and a resident in Muhoza Sector.
