A man in Gicumbi has died after he was shot by police as he was trying to escape from custody.
Eric Hashakimana, 26, was a key suspect in an investigation into the use of poison in Gicumbi District.
Police spokesperson Damas Gatare, said the incident was regrettable.
"Hashakimana was shot and killed as he tried to escape on the way to the scene of crime,” Gatare said.
According to Police, the suspect approached Police officers on Sunday morning, pleaded guilty and asked to show the officers where he got the poison he used in the crime from.
"Hashakimana, on June 15 at about 10am, while leading the investigation team to show them (Police officers) where he got the poison in Rukomo business centre, Nyamiyaga Cell of Kageyo Sector, jumped off the vehicle in an attempt to escape and was shot and killed on the spot,” Gatare said.
"Suspects are urged to always accept to face justice because they are assured of fair trial, instead of risking their lives.”
